Aamir Khan on Patriarchy in Cinema
Aamir Khan voiced his disappointment over films that propagate a patriarchal view of masculinity. “Not nice. It pushes us back a decade. So that’s sad. I wish we didn’t see that, but that’s part of life,” he remarked. He acknowledged that everyone has their own opinions, but he stressed that the promotion of patriarchy—both overt and hidden—is something society must deal with.
The Ingrained Nature of Patriarchy
While Aamir acknowledged that society has progressed, he believes that elements of patriarchy still remain deeply rooted. “These are deep-rooted concepts. A lot of males are very insecure. We live in a patriarchal society where a lot of men believe that they have the power to decide how much independence should be given to the women around them,” Aamir said, adding that these issues will take time to change.
The Role of Stories in Changing Hearts
Aamir Khan also spoke about the power of storytelling in changing societal views. “Stories can really change people’s hearts. You can try and convince a person in an argument with logic, but that only goes so far. Emotionally convincing a person through stories and characters touches people’s hearts in ways,” he explained. Aamir has used his platform to address issues such as domestic violence and abusive marriages in films like Secret Superstar and Laapataa Ladies.
