Aamir Khan’s Views on Oscar Nominations for Indian Films
In a candid interview with BBC Asian Network, Aamir Khan spoke about why Indian films rarely get nominated for the Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards.
Aamir explained, “People forget that’s probably the toughest category at the Oscars. When you’re competing for Best Film, you’re competing with a limited number of films. But in the Best International Feature category, you’re competing with the best film from each country… And then you’re in an arena where there are 80 other films. To be nominated among 80 films is itself tough.” He further added, “The reason why we don’t have nominations every year for India is because there are films from Iran, Germany, France, from all over the world which are very good films. You’re in very good company.”
Shah Rukh Khan’s Perspective on Indian Film Formats
In a past interview, Shah Rukh suggested that Indian films need to evolve and change their format to be considered for the prestigious awards. Shah Rukh said, “Lagaan was a combination of an art and commercial film together… it’s a wonderfully made film… but Indian films have to change the format of our films.” He also likened it to being invited to a party and having to dress according to the host’s dress code: “If I’m invited to your party, I need to dress up in the code you tell me to. I cannot be wearing my code of two and a half hours and five songs. We have to change that.”
Aamir Khan Disagrees with Shah Rukh Khan’s Views
Aamir Khan, however, disagreed with Shah Rukh’s perspective. “No, I don’t agree. I don’t agree. Lagaan proves that a film with songs, which is also very long, is not a problem for the Academy members,” Aamir noted. “It depends on how good your work is, and how you’re able to touch hearts. Members are also human beings at the end of the day.”
Indian Films at the Oscars: A Historic Overview
In the history of Indian cinema, only three films—Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan—have been nominated in the Best International Feature category. Recently, RRR made waves by winning the Best Original Song award, while The Elephant Whisperers took home the Best Documentary Short award. Films like Writing with Fire and All That Breathes also received nominations in the Best Documentary Feature category.
