Aamir Khan News: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, known for his groundbreaking performances and blockbuster hits, recently shared how the COVID-19 pandemic pushed him to the brink of retirement. The actor, 59, is currently in the United States promoting Lost Ladies (Laapataa Ladies), India’s official entry for the foreign language category at the upcoming Academy Awards. The film, co-produced by Khan and his ex-wife Kiran Rao, also marks Rao’s directorial return.
Aamir Khan’s Emotional Breakdown During the Pandemic
During an interview with Reuters, Aamir Khan revealed the personal turmoil he faced during the global lockdown. “I felt that I had not given enough time or bandwidth to my relationships,” he admitted. The realization led to feelings of guilt and a personal crisis. “And that, you know, got me really guilty. And I kind of had a bit of a breakdown,” he added. Khan shared that his family was shocked when he announced his decision to retire. However, it was a candid conversation with Kiran Rao that made him reconsider. “She said if you’re leaving films, you’re leaving. You’re leaving us, you’re leaving everything. I was a bit taken aback by that. But then I’m glad I changed my mind and I’m back,” he said.
A Legacy of Success in Bollywood
Known as one of Bollywood’s most iconic actors, Aamir Khan has consistently delivered record-breaking films. His last release, Laal Singh Chaddha, the Hindi adaptation of Forrest Gump, may not have performed as expected, but it remains a notable part of his filmography. As a member of the legendary Khan trio, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, Aamir has been a dominant force in Indian cinema for over three decades.
The Social Relevance of Lost Ladies
Aamir Khan’s return to cinema comes with Lost Ladies, a film that blends comedy with sharp social commentary. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film tells the story of two veiled brides who are mistakenly swapped during a train journey.
While the premise appears lighthearted, the film tackles deeper societal issues such as corruption and entrenched patriarchal traditions. “Actually, humor and satire, I think, is pretty much the best way we can openly talk about issues that are unpleasant, that are difficult, that are entrenched. You know, patriarchy is just deeply entrenched,” Rao explained.
A Promising Journey Ahead
Lost Ladies premiered in cinemas earlier this year and is now available on Netflix. As Aamir Khan looks forward to the film’s journey at the Oscars, his renewed passion for cinema signals that his storied career is far from over.
