Carlos Sainz of Ferrari has won his first Formula One race after a thrilling battle at the British Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Sergio Perez of Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.
The late Safety Car caused by Esteban Ocon retiring his Alpine was crucial to Sainz’s victory; Sainz then attacked teammate Charles Leclerc on fresh tyres at the restart to claim P1 and look for his first win on his 150th Grand Prix start.
However, in the final laps, Perez – who had dropped to P16 after a pit stop due to contact at the early race restart following a red-flag stoppage – came out on top in a thrilling battle with Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to take an unlikely P2. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton delighted the crowd with his second consecutive podium and 13th at Silverstone – an all-time record at a single track – in P3.
The drama that prompted the early red flag occurred at the original race start, when Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu and Williams’ Alex Albon were both taken to the medical centre following separate Turn 1 incidents – with Zhou later released, while Albon was transferred to nearby Coventry Hospital for precautionary checks, with those two, along with Mercedes’ George Russell, forced to retire as a result of the incidents.
