Dharmendra First Marriage: In her mother Hema Malini’s biography, actor Esha Deol candidly shared how she first discovered her father Dharmendra’s previous marriage. This revelation came during her childhood when a classmate’s unexpected question sparked her curiosity about her family.
The Surprising Discovery
Esha recounted a moment from her time in fourth grade when a peer innocently asked if she had “two mothers.” Initially dismissing the question as nonsense, Esha couldn’t shake the thought and sought answers at home. She confronted her mother, Hema Malini, who decided it was time to share the truth with her young daughter. Esha recalled her shock but was quick to appreciate her mother’s honesty. “We were in the fourth standard, so we were quite naïve back then. It’s different nowadays; kids are much more aware,” she reflected.
Hema explained to Esha that her father, Dharmendra, had been married to another woman, Prakash Kaur, before he met Hema. Esha learned that her half-siblings included actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Reflecting on this revelation, Esha shared, “I realized that my mother married someone who was already married and had a family, but honestly, it never made me feel uncomfortable or upset. I give full credit to my parents for the way they handled it and ensured we never felt any different.”

Growing Up in a Unique Family Setup
Despite the unconventional family dynamics, Esha emphasized that she never felt deprived of a father’s love. Dharmendra, while maintaining his bond with his first family, made it a point to spend time with Esha and her sister Ahana. He would join them for meals regularly, although he never stayed overnight. Esha noted, “When I visited my friends’ houses, I noticed their fathers were around all the time. That’s when I realized that it’s common to have dads present at home. But for us, it never felt odd because we were brought up in a way that made us content with the love we received from our mother and our time with our father.”
Esha expressed gratitude towards her parents for nurturing a positive environment. She always felt secure with her mother, Hema, and cherished the moments she shared with her father, despite his limited presence at home. “I’ve always felt lucky. I was content with my mother’s love and cherished the time I had with my father. The way my parents handled everything ensured that we grew up in a happy and healthy environment,” Esha shared.
A Legendary Love Story
Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s love story began in 1970 on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawaan. Their chemistry both on and off-screen quickly became the talk of the industry. The couple tied the knot in 1980, making Hema Dharmendra’s second wife. Despite being married to Prakash Kaur since 1954, Dharmendra did not divorce his first wife, a decision that was unconventional yet accepted by both families over time.
Dharmendra and Hema went on to have a successful professional partnership, starring together in iconic films like Sholay, The Burning Train, and Dharm Aur Qanoon. Their personal and professional lives intertwined seamlessly, creating a legacy that is admired by many.
