At the same time, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), along with his sisters Bakhtawar and Asifa, and senior PPP leaders including Jahangir Badar and Rehman Malik, were also present in the Chinese capital.
According to reports, both delegations were in Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) to attend the Olympics’ opening ceremony.
The two families – historically influential in their respective countries – held a brief meeting lasting approximately 30 minutes. Sonia Gandhi offered condolences to the Bhutto siblings on the assassination of their mother, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who had been killed earlier that year.
In public statements at the time, Rehman Malik described the meeting as warm and personal, emphasizing that no political discussions were held. The focus, he said, was on shared grief, family memories, and a gesture of goodwill.
At the same time, several media reports also claimed that Indian National Congress (INC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CPC, reportedly allowing for consultations on political and international matters. Though the contents of the MoU have never been made fully public, it has remained a subject of political interest.
Reports also suggest that the Pakistan Peoples Party entered into a similar agreement with the CPC later that year, though formal details remain unconfirmed.
Now, more than 18 years later, a photograph of this meeting has resurfaced on social media, drawing renewed attention and debate. The image – widely circulated in the past week – has prompted fresh questions about the nature and implications of such informal engagements, especially considering the sensitive dynamics between India and Pakistan.
While the meeting was not an official diplomatic event, the fact that it took place on Chinese soil, under the CPC’s invitation, and involved the heirs of two political dynasties with long histories of regional influence, has sparked public interest.
Some commentators and users online have asked the Congress party to clarify the purpose and context of the meeting, particularly as it involved high-level political figures from both sides of the India-Pakistan divide in an international setting.
