In the 2016 film LaLa Land, Emma Stone’s character, an aspiring actress, kickstarts her career by writing, producing, and starring in her own play.
Jennifer Levinson did something very similar, but instead of performing in front of a handful of theatregoers, she got her break by performing in front of millions on social media. After years of appearing on YouTube and Snapchat, Levinson, 30, is now the writer, producer, and performer in Trust, a new feature-length film distributed by Menemsha Films. She also hosts an Instagram and TikTok show for Romwe, a Chinese fashion company owned by Shein.
Levinson was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended Chapman University before working in social media. She attributes her success to her social media following, which has included commercials for Marriott and promotional videos for Sony Pictures.
Levinson’s heart was in scripted material. So she began making short films for fun in order to get content out there. And she was noticed by Tribeca Film Festival in 2020, which is a huge, well-known film festival. They accepted me into their N.O.W. Creator’s Market, which gave me the opportunity to showcase all of the content I’d been working on and pitch to various networks and producers. And she had this short proof of concept called Trust, which was completely out of character for the type of content I was producing at the time. However, it is essentially about three siblings coming to terms with their mother’s suicide.
