The film, which promises to portray India’s most controversial political chapter, has already accumulated enough criticism and buzz. Kangana recently revealed that the project would have been cancelled without one crucial factor- Anupam Kher.
Kangana on Casting Anupama Kher
In an exclusive interaction with ANI, Kangana shared her admiration for veteran actor Anupam Kher, who plays the role of the late political leader Jayaprakash Narayan. She revealed, “It was very important for me to have Anupam ji in this film. If he refused to do Emergency, then I wouldn’t have made it. Look at his on-screen personality….there’s honesty on his face. No one can portray the role of Jayaprakash Narayan except him.”
Anupam Kher’s portrayal of Narayan promises to be one of the film’s highlights, adding an unparalleled authenticity to the narrative.

Anupam Kher on Kangana
The veteran actor reciprocated Kangana’s sentiments, calling her one of the most hardworking and talented directors he has worked with. Reflecting on his experience during the Emergency era, Anupam said, “I was in National School of Drama in New Delhi when Emergency was declared. So, I did not have to do much research for this film…also, Kangana had researched on everyone’s behalf. This will be one of the finest films made on any political subject.”
He further added, “Kangana does effortless work. She has put so much hard work behind Emergency. …. To direct the whole film and act as Indra Gandhi isn’t an easy job, Kangana did it…one of the finest directors that I have worked with.”
A Power-Packed Cast Brings History to Life
Emergency boasts an impressive ensemble cast. While Kangana steps into the shoes of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, fans will also see: Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Also Mahima Choudhary will be playing Pupul Jayakar and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.
