Keira Knightley Rejects Pirates Return: Keira Knightley, who became synonymous with Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, has made it clear that she’s not interested in reprising her role. Despite the immense success of the franchise, which helped launch her career, Keira has a complex relationship with it. Reflecting on her time in the series, Keira shared, “It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time. I was seen as shit because of them, and yet because they did so well I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for. They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of, and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So they’re a very confused place in my head.”

Keira also opened up about the grueling nature of the shoot schedules for the Pirates films. “The hours are insane. It’s years of your life, you have no control over where you’re filming, how long you’re filming, what you’re filming,” she explained. Since becoming a mother to two daughters, Delilah and Edie, with her husband, musician James Righton, Keira has made a conscious decision to prioritize her family over her career. “I couldn’t go job to job now. I wouldn’t be in any way fair to them, and I wouldn’t want to. I’ve chosen to have children, I want to bring them up, so I’ve had to take a major step back,” Keira explained of her decision to turn down projects, especially those involving long commitments like multi-film franchises. Over the years, Keira has also turned down various film roles, particularly those centered around tragic themes. “I’ve wanted it to be more pure entertainment and maybe that’s because I’ve needed that. I keep being offered things about children dying or about mothers dying. Can’t do it,” she confessed, sharing how her personal life has influenced the kind of roles she now chooses to pursue.
