Luuk de Jong had a topsy turvy season (last season). He first joined FC Barcelona on loan move from his parent club Sevilla FC on the special request of then Barca coach Ronald Koeman on transfer deadline day back in August 2021. Since joining Barca Luke had a tough start, he was unable to perform and show his class to Camp Nou people. He was booed all over the place and even termed a flop signing by many.
As the time passed by, Barcelona had management change then came Xavi Hernandez in charge. Under Xavi suddenly things changed for Luuk de Jong. Aguero had to retire due ongoing heart problems, Ansfu Fati was out injured and his fellow dutchmen Memphis Depay was out of form. So Xavi had to rely on Luke De Jong. The Dutchmen were not disappointed then. Luuk came in clutch many times and scored crucial goals for FC Barcelona. In the second half of the season Luke was used as super sub and was called upon whenever the team was in need. Luuk de Jong disappointed the faith shown in him by coach Xavi and he too responded with a last minute equalizer or match winning goal. Thus Luke De Jong became a Cult Hero at Nou Camp in no time.
Now at the end of season, Barcelona have decided to not make a loan move of Luuk de Jong permanently as they have an option to make the transfer for 20 million. But since Barca didn’t make that move Luuk de Jong returned to parent club Sevilla on 30th June 2022.
It looks like even Sevilla didn’t want him for some reason and they decided to term him surplus to their requirements and thus he has been sold to his former club PSV Eindhoven for a fee of 4 million euros (as per the reports). Luke De Jong was a PSV player before joining Sevilla back in 2019. Luke De Jong had a decent 3 years in Spain 2 with Sevilla and one with Barcelona.
Luuk de Jong scored 28 goals in total in his 3 years in Spain, 19 for Sevilla in 94 games and 7 goals for Barcelona in 29 games last season.
The 31 year old returns to Netherlands (PSV) with some much needed form and confidence behind him and PSV will expect him to score tons of goals for them in order to help reclaim Eredivisie title from arch-rival Ajax.
