The use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, which use either renewable or waste-derived materials, will assist Mercedes in achieving a nearly 50% reduction in the team’s air travel footprint for race personnel, with flights currently accounting for more than a quarter of the team’s projected carbon footprint.
The team’s purchase of Sustainable Aviation Fuels falls outside of the Formula 1 cost cap, covering what are known as ‘Scope 3′ emissions, which include emissions from business travel, among other things. The multi-million dollar investment in fuels is part of Mercedes’ drive to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030, as confirmed by the Science Based Targets Initiative.
Speaking of investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuels, which are currently limited in quantity but offer a “immense” opportunity for the future, Mercedes believes they offer a “immense” opportunity. Toto Wolff, Team Principal, stated, “Sustainable Aviation Fuel has the potential to transform the way we travel and the impact we have on the environment.”
Mercedes’ announcement of an investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuels comes after Formula One reaffirmed its own commitment to being Net Zero Carbon by 2030, which will be aided by the use of 100 percent sustainable fuels, which will be introduced in 2026.
