PM Modi with Bhutan King: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck recently held discussions on strengthening cooperation for the development of the Gelephu special administrative region. The Gelephu Mindfulness City project, a key initiative of Wangchuck, and India’s continued support for Bhutan’s 13th Five Year Plan (2024-29) were central topics of the talks.
India’s Continued Support for Gelephu Project
During the meeting, PM Modi reassured King Wangchuck of India’s unwavering support for the Gelephu project, which is expected to bring prosperity to both Bhutan and the surrounding border areas. The project, located close to the Indian border, aims to establish the area as an economic hub, fostering regional development and strengthening ties between India and Bhutan.
As stated in a joint statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that the project “will bring prosperity and well-being in Bhutan and also the border areas, and further strengthen economic and investment linkages between the two countries.”
Strengthening Economic and Development Ties
The two leaders also discussed the progress of Bhutan’s 13th Five Year Plan, with a special focus on the Economic Stimulus Programme. India’s increased financial support for Bhutan’s development projects was highlighted, with the Indian government doubling its support for the five-year plan from ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore this year. The move reflects India’s commitment to countering China’s growing presence in the region and furthering Bhutan’s economic growth.
The joint statement noted the Bhutanese government’s appreciation of India’s support for these initiatives, particularly the backing for Bhutan’s Economic Stimulus Programme.
Energy Cooperation and Hydropower Projects
Energy cooperation, especially in the clean energy sector, was another crucial aspect of the discussions. Both leaders reviewed the ongoing progress in renewable energy projects, including the development of non-hydro renewable energy sources.
The two sides also emphasized enhancing future cooperation in hydropower, including the urgent finalization of new projects, particularly reservoir hydro projects, to bolster bilateral energy ties.
Cross-Border Connectivity and Infrastructure Development
The opening of the Integrated Check Post at Darranga, Assam, was another key highlight of the meeting. This facility is expected to boost tourism and economic activity in both eastern Bhutan and the adjoining areas of Assam. The leaders expressed satisfaction over the progress of cross-border connectivity initiatives, which include two new cross-border rail links and improvements in digital connectivity between the two countries.
Through these discussions, India and Bhutan have reaffirmed their strong relationship and mutual commitment to development and cooperation across various domains, from energy and infrastructure to trade and cross-border connectivity.
