Bhansali’s Thoughtful Words During a Difficult Time
Recalling the time of her father’s passing, Priyanka said:
“I was supposed to start Mary Kom the month my dad died. So the sets (for the boxing scenes) were up. And my dad passed. I remember, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had come to the funeral. He gave me a hug and said, ‘You don’t need to come to work. I understand, it’s totally fine. We’ll shut the sets down. We’ll do it when you’re ready.’”
However, Priyanka chose to return to work just four days after the funeral. She explained:
“The one thing that my father would’ve never wanted me to do was not go to work. So I went back to work four days after his funeral because I know that’s what my dad wanted me to do. And I put all my grief into those fight scenes.”
Processing Loss Through Her Work
Priyanka admitted that she struggled to fully process her father’s loss. During the release of The Sky Is Pink (2019), a film about parents dealing with the loss of their child, Priyanka shared how the role helped her confront her own grief. She co-produced the movie under her banner, Purple Pebble Pictures, reflecting her emotional connection to its theme.
Priyanka and Bhansali’s Collaborations
Before Mary Kom, Priyanka featured in a special song in Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela (2013), starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. Later, she delivered a memorable performance as Kashi Bai in Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani (2015), sharing screen space with Ranveer and Deepika.
