“Whether It Makes Sense”
Matt Reeves, who helmed The Batman (2022), addressed this intriguing topic during a podcast at the Golden Globes. On the potential crossover, Reeves stated:
“There was a story I wanted to tell. The epic crime saga. It’s been important to me to play that out, and James and Peter have been really great about that. They are letting us do that. What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea. My head is down right now on getting The Batman Part 2 shooting, which is the most important thing.”
On whether Robert Pattinson’s Batman could join the DC Universe, he added: “I don’t know, we will have to see where that goes.”
Shooting to Begin Soon
Reeves is fully focused on The Batman Part 2, which is expected to begin filming later this year. Fans eagerly await the sequel to the gritty, noir-style take on Gotham’s vigilante, but there’s a long wait ahead. Warner Bros. recently announced a new data, pushing the film back by a year.
New Release Date
The Batman Part 2 is now scheduled for a global theatrical release on October 1, 2027. The delay sparked disappointment among fans, but James Gunn defended the decision, citing it as a normal occurrence in the making of big-budget sequels.
“To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn explained. Comparing it to iconic franchises, he recounted, “7 Years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians vol. 2 and Vol. 3.”
The Delay is Due to Script
According to Deadline, Gunn revealed that the delay is purely script-related: “Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script. Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
Robert Pattinson’s The Batman was a massive hit, grossing USD 369.3 million domestically and USD 772 million globally. Its success has set high expectations for the sequel, even as discussions about its potential crossover with Gunn’s DC Universe continue.
