Ralph Boschung will be replaced by Roberto Merhi at “upcoming events” in the 2022 Formula 2 season, according to Campos Racing. Boschung has been hampered by a neck injury that has persisted since the early rounds of the season, but will now rest to allow it to heal completely.
The Swiss driver admitted that it was a difficult decision, but he was confident that it was the best thing for his future, adding that his replacement will be a capable member of the Campos team.
“It’s been a difficult few months, as the neck has dominated my everyday and professional life since Imola. It’s difficult to leave the team mid-season like this, but I really need to recover from this injury, and I thank my sponsors and the team for their full support. I wish Roberto the best of luck in Austria, and I am delighted to have given him the opportunity to drive the MoonMobile; he is a good friend and an excellent driver.”
Merhi last raced in FIA Formula 2 in 2018, competing for Campos in the final four rounds of the season. The Spaniard earned a podium finish during the final race weekend at Yas Marina, finishing third in the Sprint Race. The main himself stated that the track where he will make his F2 return is a good one, and he has set his sights high for the weekend.
“I’m thrilled to be driving Ralph’s car. I will do everything in my power to produce strong results in order to repay Ralph’s, his sponsors’, and Campos Racing’s faith in me. In 2018, I drove an F2 car for the final time with Campos Racing, with whom I shared the podium at Yas Marina. I really enjoy the Spielberg circuit; it’s a great place to return.”
