Samuel L Jackson Oscar Nomination: Veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson recently shared his candid thoughts on Oscar nominations, calling them overrated and emphasizing that the true honor lies in winning the award. Speaking in an interview with the Associated Press while promoting his film The Piano Lesson alongside Michael Potts, Jackson dismissed the idea that being nominated is a significant achievement.
“It’s an Honor to Win, Not to Be Nominated”
“We’ve been in the business long enough to know that when folks go, ‘It’s just an honour to be nominated.’ No it ain’t. It’s an honour to win,” said the Pulp Fiction star. Jackson pointed out that most Oscar-nominated performances, and even some wins, are often forgotten over time.

He added, “You get nominated and folks go, ‘Yeah I remember that.’ Or most people forget. Generally it’s a contest you didn’t volunteer to be in. I didn’t go in there so I could flex. ‘Let me do my scene, so you can remember who I was.’ They nominate you and people go, ‘What is that movie you’re nominated for? What’s the name of that thing?’ And after it’s over and people have a hard time remembering who even won.”
Limited Oscar Recognition Despite Iconic Career
Despite an illustrious career spanning decades, Jackson has only received one Oscar nomination. He was nominated in 1995 for his iconic role in Pulp Fiction. In 2021, he was presented with an honorary Academy Award, though he noted last year in an interview with Vulture that the prize “didn’t feel honorary” and felt like a proper Oscar win.
Reflections on Past Oscar Losses
Jackson has been outspoken about missing out on what he believes were deserved wins. In 2022, he told The Times that he should have won the 1995 Best Supporting Actor Oscar over Martin Landau, who took the award for Ed Wood. Additionally, in an interview with Vulture, Jackson expressed disappointment at not even being nominated for his powerful performance in Joel Schumacher’s A Time to Kill (1996), which many consider a snub.
Samuel L. Jackson’s remarks underscore his belief that while recognition is appreciated, it’s the win that truly matters in the highly competitive landscape of the Oscars. With his candid insights and undeniable talent, Jackson continues to leave an indelible mark on Hollywood, regardless of awards.
