Tom Cruise Apologizes Brooke Shields: Years after their public fallout over her use of antidepressants, Brooke Shields revealed in her memoir that Tom Cruise privately apologized for his controversial remarks. Shields, who faced criticism from the Mission Impossible star during her postpartum journey, opened up about the incident and its aftermath in her book, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.
The Apology That Came “Eventually”
Reflecting on the apology, Brooke wrote, “It wasn’t the world’s best apology, but it’s what he was capable of, and I accepted it.” While she did accept Cruise’s effort to make amends, she didn’t shy away from discussing the impact of his infamous comments, which she described as a “ridiculous rant.”
Back in 2005, Cruise publicly criticized Shields for taking antidepressants to manage postpartum depression, calling her “irresponsible” and claiming the medication “didn’t cure anything.” Shields responded strongly, penning an op-ed in The New York Times, where she firmly countered Cruise’s remarks.

Standing Her Ground
Shields revealed that she felt compelled to speak up, not just to defend herself but to highlight the reality of postpartum depression. She wrote, “Had Tom taken a public swing at me before I became a mother, I probably would have stayed quiet. I would have ignored his ridiculous rant.”
However, Shields admitted that her newfound confidence as a mother gave her the strength to fight back. “I might have been content to sit back while this very famous man hijacked my experience to advance his own (deluded) agenda… But I decided not to sit quietly and let myself be attacked.”
A Decade of Reflection
Though the apology came years later, Shields grace in accepting it reflects her resilience and self-confidence, qualities that continue to inspire her readers and fans alike.
