Stoffel Vandoorne, the current Formula E champion, has joined Aston Martin as a test and reserve driver for the 2023 season.
Vandoorne, an F1 reserve for Mercedes, the F1 engine supplier for Aston Martin, won the Formula E championship with the German manufacturer’s team during its final season in the all-electric division. The DS Stellantis brand will be his Formula E team for the upcoming season, and his Aston Martin obligations will align with this schedule.
Vandoorne will “undertake an intense simulation and development programme at the team’s Silverstone plant,” according to Aston Martin, and will work alongside F2 champion Felipe Drugovich, who joined the team’s driver development programme back in September.
Being a reserve driver in Formula 1 is really exciting, and I’m thrilled to be doing it with Aston Martin, said Vandoorne.
“I’ve followed the team’s growth and operational expansion with great interest, and I’m aware of how fiercely committed it is to making improvements in every area.
I’m really looking forward to the challenge – and reward – of working together with the entire organisation at Silverstone. “Joining Fernando [Alonso], who I already know from my Formula 1 racing career, and Lance [Stroll], to help them develop and improve next year’s car, will be a terrific job,” he said.
Vandoorne will balance his responsibilities with Aston Martin with his Formula E obligations, where he will compete for the DS Penske team in the 2022–2023 season.
