While discussing India’s modern history, Vikrant stated, “We need to understand that we are a young nation. It’s been 76-77 years since independence. After centuries of oppression by the Mughals, the Dutch, the French, and the British, we achieved what we call one ‘so-called Azadi’. But was it true independence? The colonial mindset persisted, and only now are we starting to reclaim our identity.” He also emphasized the role of sentiment in shaping historical conflicts and decision-making, suggesting that Indians are beginning to assert their cultural identity in new ways.
However, his use of the term “so-called Azadi” did not sit well with many on social media. The backlash was swift, with one user questioning his intentions: “What has happened to him? Is he saying all this to promote the film? One should keep an eye on him even after release.” Another quipped, “Naye itihaaskaar (New historian).” Others were harsher in their assessment. “Laakhon logon ke balidaan ke baad mili Azaadi inko so-called lag rahi hai. Inke jaise gaddaar sirf Bharat me hi paaye jaate hain (The independence we won after millions of people’s sacrifice seems so-called to him. Traitors like this are only found in India.” Many even compared Vikrant to Kangana Ranaut, who previously sparked outrage by stating that India gained “real independence” only in 2014, dubbing him the “Male Kangana Ranaut.”
