The Meeting That Could Have Changed It All
Mahira recounted dressing in a simple white salwar kameez and going to a studio, where a man at the meeting asked her, “Are you Madhubala?” Mahira laughingly responded with a “Yes,” only for him to ask if she would be interested in doing an Indian film. Mahira cheekily replied, “Yes, I’ll do it, but with Shah Rukh Khan.” She was then told she would be meeting Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
When Mahira finally met Bhansali in Mumbai, she described the filmmaker as a creative genius. “What a man he is! So creative and a genius. He said, ‘Can you wipe your lipstick off?’ I said, ‘I’m not wearing any lipstick.’ So he said, ‘wipe it off,’ and I did. He said, ‘wow.’ At that time, he told me about Heeramandi. He was very excited that I could be a part of it, but it didn’t work out.”
Political Barriers That halted a Dream
Mahira explained that Heeramandi was initially planned as a film. However, due to political tensions and subsequent attacks in India, she couldn’t proceed with the project. “It was in the works and it was a film at that time. Right after that, some attacks happened. So for political problems, I couldn’t work in it.”
“Don’t tell him you’re married”
“That time, it was this thing that don’t tell him you’re married. That night I couldn’t sleep. I was anxious and couldn’t sleep. So, I told Moin Baeg that I want Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s number because I want to tell him that I’m married. I wanted to be an actor all my life, and I can’t start it with a lie.”
After calling Bhansali and revealing the truth, the filmmaker asked her to send an audition. She performed a piece from Mughal-e-Azam, but the project didn’t materialize due to unforeseen circumstances.
