In a major security breach, a man impersonating as an Indian Navy personnel fled with a rifle and ammunition from a sentry post in the Naval residential area in South Mumbai.
The headquarters of the Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy is in Mumbai.
The incident took place on 6 September, when the security was extremely tight because of Anant Chaturdashi, the eleventh and final day of immersion of idols of Lord Ganeshotsav.
“A junior sailor, whilst on sentry duty, was allegedly approached by another person in naval uniform who relieved him of his duties, indicating that he had been sent to do the same. Later, the person who assumed sentry duties was found missing from his post along with the rifle and ammunition,” Indian Navy spokesperson said.
An extensive search operation is underway to recover the lost items by the Indian Navy in coordination with Mumbai Police. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the circumstances leading to the incident. An FIR has been registered in the Cuffe Parade police station.
